Assessment 1; Frippertronics

For the first assessment, following on from my research into Brian Eno’s techniques using tape delay, I decided to digitally emulate his technique which was later called Frippertronics (detailed in my research) I wrote an ambient track which I left quite dry with lots of prolonged rests to really showcase the effect. I set up two stereo delay units, set the mix completely wet and sent all the instrumentation to the first delay bus, which itself was then sent to another. An EQ was used on the first delay bus to ‘play’ the delay, and after a lot of experimentation I found some really interesting ways of manipulating the sound.

I used automation on the EQ to control the changing EQ settings, with two different peaks moving throughout the spectral range, and one high cut set at 20hz, because I found I was able to adjust the gain on it to affect the overall mix of frequencies, and how ‘wet’ they were.

Finally I automated the level on the first delay bus for further control, and in all cases I routed the automation to the mod wheel to ‘play’ the delay throughout the track.
